From traditional celebrations to Summer Festivals

Giglio island has plenty events taking place every year, from the summer events as festivals, sports, tours, plays, concerts and autumn walking weeks to the traditional celebrations of the feasts in honor of the patron saint of the village and the grape festival:

The most important events at Giglio are the celebrations of the patron Saints of the three villages with palio (nautical / donkeys), concerts and fireworks: at Giglio Porto San Lorenzo (August 10th), at Campese San Rocco (August 16th) and at Giglio Castello San Mamiliano (September 15th).

During the last weekend of September the very popular Festival of Grapes and Open Taverns takes place in Giglio Castello and became a sort of small tradition over the past years.

Recurring Cultural and Culinary Events

Every year Giglio, the Festival Island, hosts major music festivals, theatrical performances, photographic exhibitions, folkloric events and the Grape and Cellar festival which usually takes place in September on the occasion of the grape harvest.

Musica al Giglio

Since 2006 the MusicalGiglio Chamber Music Festival has been held at the end of July with concerts also outdoors as in the "Altura" vineyard. Organized by the Petracchi family, the musicians are first solo parts of the theaters that make Italy famous all over the world: Teatro San Carlo, Teatro Carlo Felice, Teatro alla Scala, or established soloists. The program, as per tradition, chooses among the great classics of the chamber repertoire with some lesser known curiosities.

Il Giglio è Lirica Festival

The summer festival of lyric and symphonic music "Giglio è Lirica" is of great prestige: an annual event organized for more than 10 years by the Associazione l'Arte in Scena under the artistic direction of Gianni Mongiardino. The festival includes among the repertoire works such as Elisir d'Amore (Donizetti), Cavalleria Rusticana (MAscagni), Rigoletto (Verdi), La vedova allegra (Lehar), Carmina Burana (Orff) and classical concerts by Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart.

The Theater of Giglio

The association "Il Teatro del Giglio" was created in 1995 by Pietro Buttarelli and since then every summer a new theatrical performance has been presented. Currently the direction is curated by Andrea Giannoni who creates small masterpieces with great public success. Some of the works staged are: The wedding, The bear, A marriage question, The anniversary, Bertoldo, Miles Gloriosus, Doctor by force, Pinocchio, Lysistrata, The Decameron, La Mandragola, L'elisir d'amore, Sleeping Beauty, Pluto, The Turk in the cellar, Parenti serpenti and Lo scaldaletto.

Grape Festival

For about ten years the "Festa dell'Uva e delle Cantine Aperte" takes place during the last weekend of September on the occasion of the grape harvest In every corner of the charming village of Giglio Castello you can taste the food and wine excellences of the island of Giglio and the evenings are animated with traveling music. Thanks to its success - it is one of the most important and participatory festivals on the island of Giglio - it has become a sort of small tradition.

New Year's Dirge

Among the popular traditions, the most lively for its originality is the New Year’s Lullaby whose text has been handed down orally from ancient times.

As soon as the new year has entered, a group of young people play and sing the dirge at the homes of some families, formulating wishes, invoking the blessing of heaven and praising the beauty of the hosts and concluding with the execution of a waltz, consisting of local “miscisti”.
